Capri is one of the prettiest cities on the Amalfi Coast. From the blooming bougainvillea on buildings, to the picturesque views, the true blue Mediterranean water, and the charming shops. I have always dreamed about visiting Capri so when we finally had a full free day to ourselves, my friends and I packed up our day bags and set out for another Italian adventure.
The first thing we sought out to do when arriving to the island was to take a boat tour of the Grotta Azzura, more commonly known in English as the Blue Grotto. We had perfect timing when we arrived to the dock. One of the boat crewmen told us that due to the upcoming rain showers and the afternoon high tide this would be the last boat tour of the day. So, without hesitation we bought our ferry tickets and we was on our way to the Grotta Azzura.
If you ever make it to the Amalfi Coast I highly recommend at least spending a day in Capri and touring the Blue Grotto. Seeing the way the sunlight illuminated the Mediterranean Sea was both magical and magnificent. What made the experience even more meaningful was that the Captain of our little boat sang my favorite Italian song, Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu (Volare) by Domenico Modugno.
** …Volare, oh oh…cantare…ohoho…nel blu dipinto di blu…felice di stare lassù
Not a moment after our ferryboat left the Blue Grotto it started to rain. As soon as the boat docked we took the tram up into the actual city of Capri, had lunch, did a little exploring, and shopped until it was time to make our ferryboat back home. Getting back to Salerno was actually another story itself.
Long story short, we had to take a ferry to Sorrento (the last direct ferry to Salerno left at 3 in the afternoon), there was road closures to and from Amalfi due to a rowing festival, so at one point we didn’t think we were going to make it home, but the bus finally showed up, and we were able to take a ferryboat ride from Amalfi to Salerno. The journey home should have only taken no more than 2 hours max but instead it took about 5 hours. Lol
I had a wonderful time in Capri and honestly the cloudy and rainy weather and the long journey home didn’t hurt my experience, it just added more memories! Thanks for reading!
With Love,
Danielle
